Susie Flynn is a Program Manager based in Cambridge, MA. She has been with VMware since 2011 and contributes to a variety of programs in the Office of the CTO. Thanks to Susie for authoring this post!   Borathons, two day hacking events, are somewhat of a tradition here at VMware. Hackathons are excellent opportunities for grassroots, employee-driven ideas to come to the forefront. Teams of up to five people come together to build Flings , features, proof-of-concepts, hacks, or new workflows. Employees are given the opportunity to work on a passion project, something new that sparks their interest, or an idea they would like to see validated. Why is it called a Borathon instead of a Hackathon? Legend has it that when VMware moved from CVS to Perforce, the new repository had an island theme – “Bora Bora”. The Office of the CTO is proud to foster a culture of innovation, while continuing to remember our historical roots through Borathon. This event accomplishes many things at once. It allows employees to step away from their day jobs and explore creative endeavors, brings together employees across disparate teams for networking and collaboration, gives employees the opportunity to present to senior [...] The post Borathon: A VMware Hackathon appeared first on Office of the CTO.

This is the first CTO blog post on VMware and the Internet of Things (‘IoT’) that right now is placed at the top of the Gartner Hype Cycle. In this first post in this series, I’ll lay out the latest thinking on the high-level structure of an IoT Infrastructure we see beginning to be established. Following installments will cover VMware’s strategy and how I see IEEE 1451 (Transducer Electronic Data Sheets) and the SI Units specification playing important roles.   Certainly, these days there is no hiding from the IoT craziness now flooding our industry. Reasoned estimates vary widely but, however one looks at it, or whichever estimate one believes, within the next five years we will see an explosion of connected devices (the ‘Things’ of the IoT) coming on-line within an emerging new infrastructure. The Things will generate a tremendously large stream of data (this is often referred to as ‘telemetry’); analytics on this telemetry will consume vastly more compute, network, and storage capacity than we have today, and generate trillions of additional value in and to society. Many refer to IoT as the integration of (traditional) IT and Operations Technology (‘OT’). OT is a catch-all term for compute, networking, and storage existing to [...] The post VMware and the Internet of Things: Motivating the Three-Tier Architecture appeared first on Office of the CTO.
